PostGIS implements the OGC Simple Features model by defining a PostgreSQL data type called <varname>geometry</varname>. It represents all of the geometry subtypes by using an internal type code (see <xref linkend="GeometryType"/> and <xref linkend="ST_GeometryType"/>). This allows modelling spatial features as rows of tables defined with a column of type <varname>geometry</varname>.

For this function to make sense the source geometries must be in the same coordinate system (have the same SRID).
